Ebert on the First Amendment.

Swiped from MetaFilter : an excellent interview with Roger Ebert:

The right really wants to punish you for having an opinion. And I think both the left and the right should celebrate people who have different opinions, and disagree with them, and argue with them, and differ with them, but don’t just try to shut them up. The right really dominates radio, and it’s amazing how much energy the right spends telling us that the press is slanted to the left when it really isn’t. They want to shut other people up. They really don’t understand the First Amendment.

Plus: more from Ebert on Michael Moore, Justin Lin’s Better Luck Tomorrow, theocracy, the repeal of the estate tax, and Do The Right Thing.

“The Right really wants to punish you for having an opinion”??
So if the Left has an opinion, and the Right doesnt agree, they should just shut up about it and not express their right to prove them otherwise? Or is he telling the Right how to disagree? Is that it?

Entertainers receive alot of their money from people like myself. Coming from the middle, if I don’t like what an entertainer has to say, oh yes, I’m goin to take my money elsewhere. Apparently some entertainers do not realize this.

And no, I am not Michelle Malkin.

I think Ebert’s point in the passage I quoted was that the right, according to him, “just want to shut other people up.” And this, I think, was the gist of Springsteen’s comments as well, if not the controversy surrounding the Dixie Chicks in general.

Coincidentally, your previous comments about the Dixie Chicks — “they need to stop their whining” — simply proves his point.

Too bad you aren’t really Michelle Malkin — that would have been soooooo cool.

It’s always about money, isn’t it? My precious tax dollars going to the unworthy. When are the so-called capitalists going to admit that they have been gulled by mercantilist dinosaurs. It isn’t about left and right anymore, emmalyn. It’s multi level marketing schemes, erosion of civil liberties, introducing sick variables in the eco system, proselytizing rolex preachers with hard hair, politicians without an ethical compass. . .

Pardon my rant, Wily. I like your blog very much. Came here via Mac Diva’s blog.
