Okay, folks: work and its demands have finally sunk in, and it's only uphill from here. So I'll be posting more infrequently here from now on; most of my posts will be at Flips in Fog City. (My students' blogs are on the sidebar there.)
Posted by the wily filipino at September 15, 2004 10:10 AMI know this is off topic but this is in response to the Rob schneider thing you had like a year ago. I dont know what all this talk about people being half filipino, part filipino, is half indonesian so thats close enough to half filipino blah blah blah, is all about. You all seems so proud to point out their part filipinoness. Its this attitude that really makes me mad. It seems like the only Filipinos that Filipinos are proud of are the ones that are half white. I dont understand this obsession with mestizos man. Nothing against them, but it just shows that side of flips that says that we are not proud to be who we are. Back home all the rich pinoys try so hard to show their spanish background though most are as iggorot as I am, and all the poor ones try so hard to be american. And Enriques mom is half flip i think so that makes him 1/4. As for me all I know is that I am Canadian who came from Phils. Now when people look at me they dont see an Asian or a south east asian for the less red necked peeps. I dont look it, I'm tall and Im big and I can actually grow facial hair. I am proud to be Pinoy and if I happen to have some other european genes so be it. Im not gonna go searching through 100's of years of family history to figure out which one of my great lola's was the one who was half spanish, just so I can proclaim to the Flip community to be less filipino than the rest. Thats what this is, instead people wanting to be more of who they are, they want to be less. Idolizing the celebreties who are part flip is a joke. There is pride in that??? It is so trivial. In 20 years no one is gonna care that some guy in duece bigalow was part flip or the dude who sang bailamos was too. And these are the people you are so proud to tell people that we have the same background with, well not really at all.
I know a lot of mestizos, due to the mail order bride thing. And you know what, those people are white to me. Because in the end its the caucasian part that is gonna stay with those people. I know a lot of white people who have native canadian blood in their genes. Some not too many generations back. Now they may acknowledge this but they couldnt give two shits about the culture or history. I dont think there is any Pinoy pride left just half-filipino pride. Man and when I went back home and saw all the actors and models and big time pinoy celebrities, I thought wow. These are the people that my fellow pinoys and pinays find attractive and desire to be, the light skinned, european looking ones. So back home theres 98% of flips wanting to look like the other 2%. No wonder there isnt any pinoy pride left, nobody wants to be pinoy anymore. And no one can change that. The only people who could change Philippines are the ones who got out and came out west. The lucky ones who got a good education, and are financially secure and have some idea of political ethics, in 3'rd world standards....LOADED. But that would never happen because going back would mean becoming what they've tried so hard to be less of. So they might as well bleach their skin and go one being what they really arent. OK Im sorry about that rant I know its a little of topic but there is truth to what I say. Just look at our language, its not even authentic. Its mixed with English and Spanish. Though I know its not rare to have a language mixed with another but look at all the other languages in asia its their own, not some 1/3 this 1/3 that and 1/3 another this. Ours is the only one thats so blended with others. And can any flip tell me what tribe they came from. I bet 90% cant. We havent been "filipinos" that long histrorically. Our histories came from these tribes, iland communities and yet not one can say where their family history comes from. It always seems to end at the spanish ancestry for the most part. And most people will think *pfft* Im not a pana or igorrot or negrito. But hey our first ever national hero was Lapu Lapu. And I guarantee you he wasnt wearing a Barong-tagalog when he offed maggelan. He was wearing a loyn cloth and had long ass hair and a spear.
Now if you havent figured out what this post is about, its not about me hating on mestisos, its me hating on the lack of pride from the pure ones.
I am a minority in this part of the world but I am an even bigger minority amongst my own people
benito - I had no idea you were the Wily Filipino - clearly, this means I haven't been reading closely (or often) enough but like, wow.
The diss is coming together - I've been meaning to get back in touch in regards to some of this Daly City material I'm trying to wrap my head around but I'm probably going to have to invoke that magical phrase "I'll do it for the book" for much of it.
drop me your email - I've since misplaced it :(
My best,
