Eating, Shopping and Laughing. Oh, and Massages.

I was mindlessly flipping channels on TV one afternoon -- my folks have the coolest cable service, with the Cartoon Network ("Courage, the Cowardly Dog" and "Samurai Jack" are great), the Discovery Channel, and stations from France, Italy, Spain, Hongkong, mainland China, and best of all: India, with '70s Bollywood films showing in the afternoon -- and I was totally taken aback when I chanced upon a talk show called "Straight Talk."

There, I was treated to the disgusting spectacle of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos's daughter, Imee Marcos-Manotoc, "interviewing" her own son, Borgy Marcos-Manotoc. All throughout adoring viewers would text them inane questions and comments via cell phone (which Imee would dutifully read), like:

- You two look so cute together!
- Borgy, you're so intelligent.* You're as smart as your grandfather!
- Are you going to run for senator?
- What's your favorite song?
- I hope you go into politics like your grandfather some day.
- Borgy, what is your favorite dish?
- Are you two close?
- More power to you!
- Borgy, will you be hosting your own talk show?
- Borgy, you're so handsome!

Jesus Christ! Why are these fucking criminals in the country in the first place? They should have been mobbed and sent back, to put it mildly, the minute they stepped onto the tarmac of Ninoy Aquino International Airport! The fact that these people are elected governors (Bongbong is governor of Ilocos Norte) and congresswomen (both Imee and Imelda are/were reps of Ilocos Norte and Leyte, respectively) is abhorrent enough -- but at least it's comprehensible, for political and monetary favors can be dispensed. But to make them celebrities -- objects of adulation for whose fans the only reward is to bask in their dubious (vain)glories -- simply boggles the mind.

Some of you might argue that Borgy** had nothing to do with the depredations of his grandparents. As Agent Scully once said, "Sure. Fine. Whatever." As far as I'm concerned, the $27,000 in yearly tuition fees he pays to the University of San Diego*** is blood money, both literally and figuratively: money pillaged from the coffers of the nation, blood exacted from the disappeared and from victims of torture.****

Let's take his mom*****, for instance: What about the $4.5 million she owes to Archimedes Trajano's family -- the kid her bodyguards tortured for at least 36 hours before he died? And Borgy himself -- how does the victim of a "bar brawl" with him end up being treated for cigarette burns on his back?

I'll end my rant with a snippet of dialogue from the show (some words are paraphrased, but most of the quotes are verbatim):

Imee: A question for Borgy. What did you learn na wholesome family values?
Borgy: Did I learn any wholesome family values?
[Imee laughs.]
Borgy: Laughing.
Imee: Tawanan. Iyon ang family bond natin, eh, puro tawanan.
Borgy: Eating, shopping and laughing.
Imee: That's right.
Borgy: Oh, and massages.
Imee: Oh yeah. We love massages.

Why?
Why are they still free to be on talk shows?
Why are they still free to be governors and congresswomen?
Why are they still free to cavort on beaches?
Why are they still free to get massages and eat and shop?
And why are they still laughing?

----------------
*My mom tells me that Borgy was on the Philippine edition of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" and almost won a million pesos for charity. "So people started saying," she recalled, "that he is as smart as his grandfather." I guess that's what passes for intelligence these days. I've never known why people still call the deposed dictator "intelligent." Why dignify a thief and killer?
**Okay, he's cute, he apparently reads Kierkegaard, and he had the good taste to go out with MTV VJ Sarah Meier. Meier, on the other hand, had the bad taste to associate with him.
***Probably couldn't get into UCSD.
****Folks have commented on my Imelda Marcos page -- see links on the right -- and said that it was funny, but it does not solve anything. They're quite right. But for me personally, it's better to make a laughingstock of Imelda -- to laugh helplessly -- than to wring my hands in despair at the sheer helplessness of it all.
*****Dang, girl! With all the money your parents stole, you'd think you'd be able to get a nose and chin job that didn't look so cheap-ass.******
******Okay, I'm being mean and insulting and petty. I honestly don't care. Could I be sued for libel if I called him Prince Ferdinand the Turd -- I mean, Third?

so, you hate the marcos family huh! well, borgy doesnt relly look good and just lucky to have a prominent background..but his mom is relly something.you cant deny the fact that the marcos family members are really fascinating and interesting compare to the aquino clan..so, deal with it!

Ano ba problema mo? just enjoy life and wish that all people do the same thing. tama na yun hate gimiks mo -- pang 70s lang yan, iba na ang takbo ng mundo ngayon. WAKE UP!!!!

At least yung mga anak ni Marcos...matatalino. They were all highly educated. Talagang maipagmamalaki. Matalino rin kasi ang mga magulang! Eh yung mga anak ni Cory? Saan sila nag-aral?

OKAY???

Well, Wily cannot forget the fact that the Marcoses were brutal criminals. It's just not a "70s thing"..........if some brutal dictator living lavishly off the blood of YOUR relatives had his heirs continue their good life...........would you still say "forget it, just enjoy life, it's only a 70s thing?"

Who gives a crap that the Marcos are more "fascinating" than the Aquinos.........this is politics we're talking about. What the hell does that have to do with the relevant socio-political fabric? Death squads and Filipino poverty here, just absolute Marcos repressive excesses. Too much Filipino Channel mentality of celebrity genuflection here, I guess.

I've watched the show and I liked it. They are both very intelligent and interesting personalities. Sorry to those who did'nt like it. Don't be so mean.

Ang daming bulag sa tama at mali, ha Wily? Yung mga respone ng mga iba dito, lintek, nakaka kilabot. Salamat sa blog mo. Kailangan ng mga taong MULAT sa katotohanan tulad mo.

I can't believe those crooks are actually still alive.

Love. Truth. Justice.

How hard is it to change the fuckin channel?!
You dickhead. Just because you don't have a life doesn't mean you have to WHINE about other people living theirs. Your pathetic..

Posted by: aries on January 7, 2004 05:24 AM

i totally share your disgust but maybe that's the reason why our country is saddled with such problems...short memories.

Ako isa lang ang gusto kong mangyari sa mga Marcoses, magwalis ng lansangan sa init ng araw (a la Metro Aide).

Mussolini's heirs were not able to stage a comeback till well after 40 years since World War 2. Tayo nga hindi pa tapos ang 40 years, yinakap na natin ang mga Hapon, what more the Marcoses?

Posted by: jade on February 12, 2004 09:15 AM

pwede ba magtanong?may program ba na ang naghohost si imee marcos?san channel? tsaka time & date?

The upbringing under different stimulating (both mental and physical)sorroundings, with the best "guidance" that money can buy, and the self confidence (also as a result) that goes with the fact that borgy does not have to worry about anything materially- gives enourmous positive effect in cultivating ones mind. Additionally the guy is well travelled- therefore well inspired I supposed.
I hope he will use his so called intelligence for the good of his people, and be wise enough not to repeat his grandparents mistakes, if there are any. People are not made of only negative things- but everyone has the will to choose--- Borgy cannot be blame in his family's
mistakes, but it is ironic that he enjoy the fruits of his family's good/bad doings.

Amen to that, Wily!

The righteous and the evil, both will face judgement and receive God's favor or wrath. Let God deal with us all!!! Our country needs to move on, let us not be self-righteous. We mus learn to forgive ourselves, so we can forgive others....

Try spending precious time on meaningful and fulfilling things, you'll look younger!!!

Have a blessed day.......

Posted by: kim on March 31, 2004 04:54 PM

What is fullfilling and meaningfull differs from one person to another. Looking younger helps very little if one's mind is not open for critical impulses. Rather try to tolerate others because one doesn't really know things before one experience them oneself.
To communicate and a good communication will always be meaningfull because we are born with the need to socialize or to express our minds-- it is for me very fullfilling.

Posted by: els on April 1, 2004 06:31 AM

I definitely agree!!! During our quiet times, a lot of questions are asked and the answers we find determine what is "MEANINGFUL" to each and every unique creation.

Having an open mind is quite a natural gift. It makes one's outlook in life a bit more profound.

Learning from our mistakes and not committing it again makes us better citizens. What a great day!!!!!

true to the fact that a parents fault should not be born by their children. i coudnt agree more with being self-righteous of willy. we are individuals. and shoudnt be pre-judged by family background. a lot of scientists and discoverers were born by criminal, drunk, not to mention ridiculous parents. but then again, a good person is made not born. we are given life and the freedom to choose life the way we want. and to mock people and chose to live mocking them day by day, ignoring the fact that we could write better ideas about the improvement and flourishment of ones and others lives, is not a good thing. we learn from our mistakes. and should be stonger people day by day. lets embrace love and share love, not disgust as noone flourished from disgust. thanks.

i sure do hope that as a person, borgy marcos manotoc would not be velified for the sins of his grandparents and even from his own. perhaps it would be too lofty to aspire that eventually the marcoses would finally come to terms with all that is alleged of them, for sure they know it themselves, even the old man surely did while lying on his deathbed. but it will come. i understand how it can be offensive to some people seeing the marcoses on tv as if nothing happened, but it is not the marcoses's fault. sadly it is indicative as to how the filipino nation have regress badly through the years (there's a lot of examples), but we again should not loose hope! perhaps what is important is to look into yourself, are you a part of this vicious cycle forever perpetuating or are you not. honestly, i don't think borgy is a significant "marcos" unless he takes adavantage of his name and join politics. he is only 21. he has a life to live, i believe it is going to be a tough one for him. lastly i did not see the show, for one i am here in canada, not much older that borgy himself, but like him has a life to live, does his own laundry, wash his own dishes, work, go to school and enjoys the weekend to the hilt. my only wish is for borgy to stay in new york and be his own man!

Posted by: nbay, canada on April 12, 2004 12:19 PM

i like your sarcasm and wit. sometimes, i feel a pinch of envy when i read about him. but who are we kidding? they have problems as well and thank goodness, their problems would never be mine. i like your remarks about his intelligence. lol. my parents are marcos loyalists and our family comes from ilocos norte. but i do understand where you are coming from. i also studied in up and a public high school. please don't mind those who insult you. they probably envy your wit.

Hey, mike california, at first i did'nt think it was you but now that i know, well, when are you visiting here in Toronto. Remember the last time i called you when i was in LA, it was at the time that i saw Borgy in Rodeo Drive shopping, gosh the pinoys back in our country are really going gaga over him, i must admit he has dating! And note, he is in new york, hmmn, i will be in new york this summer, i should contact our moles there, stalker baga, of course not! Poor kid! Heard he is really intelligent for his age. Marcos kasi! Anyway, i have better things to do, lets leave this stuff to Wily, okay. Ciao!

Posted by: nbay, canada on April 14, 2004 12:29 PM

tama nga willy, magpakamatay ka na lang...or manghada ka na lang ng kapwa mo bakla...you are disgusted with the marcoses you said?, well guess what, almost all who read this are disgusted about you, how's that?..you are such a loser!...your hatred against the marcoses resulted to people hating you...loser!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: filipino new yorker on April 14, 2004 12:59 PM

first of all, i do not know why make a fuss over borgy coz compared to other guys out there, he is just an ordinary guy. Ordinary looks and ordinary talent( if there is any). He just happend to be able to go to expensive schools AT OUR EXPENSE!! How easy you guys forget what our country went through. They (Marcoses)lived a wonderful life while most of the Filipinos can't even find food to eat on a daily basis. All those people (heroes) died in vain. Whatever happened to the word---Integrity?

Posted by: mac on April 18, 2004 06:54 PM

hey joyce?!shut the fuck up!!u too wily!!!hey its ferdinand's mistake not borgy's and imee's!!!let's just forget about it!!!

Posted by: freakygirl on April 23, 2004 11:29 PM

eyy wily... you shouldnt blame borgy for the mistakes done by his grandpa..borgy is obviously & absolutely different from his grandfather..and we shouldnt forget the "good" things the marcoses have done for us... we should not remember only the "negative" things but also the positive things their family have done for the filo people... we shouldnt be Pessimistic...wake up.... every president got somethin' from the filo people.... not just the marcoses...

Posted by: anne on April 24, 2004 01:59 AM

And why are they still laughing?>>>well, willy
it doesnt mean that you'll deprive the marcoses to have fun and eventually enjoy life!!! you're such a psycho!! but yeah i admire your wit and courage to speak your mind!! way to go mannn!!my family is into politics and we are obviously marcos loyalists!!! it is undeniable that the marcoses has still "charisma" to the filipino people.........
